As someone who has watched the growing trend of self-service tills, I feel strongly about sharing my personal perspective, “I refuse to use them.” Why? Because every time I do, I know I’m contributing to fewer job opportunities for both younger as they enter the job market and older generations as they need to produce extra income in their retirement (especially with a government who to keep the unions onside are reducing the income of pensioners to pay for it.)
What seems like a convenient option is actually reshaping the job market, costing real people their livelihoods, eroding consumer choice, and giving corporations more control over our shopping experience.

Every time we use one, it tells supermarkets that fewer staff are needed, making cashier jobs redundant. This is happening on a massive scale, as these companies focus more on boosting profits than preserving jobs. Each machine installed means fewer workers and those job losses ripple through entire communities.
